Water sports
Malta is home to some of the most stunning
diving sites in the Mediterranean especially
along the northern part of the island,
with many caves and steep drop-offs, such
as Qawra Point, Cirkewwa and Wied Iz-Zurrieq.
One of the most spectacular sites in Gozo
is Dwejra Point, which features a 35m
(115ft) tunnel. On the island of Comino,
cold currents support a varied marine
life with sizeable shoals of sardines
at Irieqa Point, while the St. Marija
Caves offer interesting cave diving and
are ideal for the more experienced, qualified
divers.
Malta offers excellent conditions for
scuba diving as the sea temperature never
drops below 13°C (55°F), making
diving possible all-year-round. Diving
equipment can be hired at favourable rates,
making it unnecessary for divers to carry
their gear with them. Several internationally
recognised diving schools also offer their
services. Diving schools will give all
the training needed for absolute beginners
who want to explore the beauty of the
maltese aquaculture.
For those who are afraid of diving, why
not try snorkeling? It is a safe and a
refreshing experience in the hot summer
weather.Rowing regattas are held in the
Grand Harbour during March and September.
The Valletta Yacht Club is at Couvre
Port, Manoel Island, in Marsamxetto Harbour
in the shadows of Valletta, offering temporary
membership. Seasonal light winds make
windsurfing in Malta a very popular sport
and many hotels and beach amenities offer
equipment and training.
